As of 2016, Americans are spending over $66 billion per year on weight loss products and services. The market is so large because more than 2 out of every 3 people in the United States are either overweight or obese.
The obesity rate in the U.S. is now over 36% according to the CDC.
It didn’t used to always be this way. As the chart below demonstrates, the number of overweight or obese Americans has risen significantly since around 1980.
Obesity is even categorized into 3 levels, with the highest being “extreme obesity”. Roughly 1 in 13 adults living in the United States, around 7 to 8 percent, are extremely obese.
In addition to the cost of trying to lose weight, there is the issue of medical costs. In 2008, the CDC estimated the yearly medical costs for obesity to be $147 billion.
On an individual level, an obese person in the U.S. will typically spend about $1,500 more per year in medical expenses than a person of average weight.
Around 100 million Americans are paying that price.
As the map below shows, some states have higher rates of obesity than others. However, no state has an obesity rate of less than 20%. Every single state in America has at least 1 in 5 of its citizens dealing with obesity.
Beyond the financial burden, there is also increased health problems. Several serious medical conditions are at much greater risk due to obesity, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even certain types of cancer.

However, obesity robs you of both your money AND your life.
